Haverford College Library
Haverford, Bryn Mawr, and Swat all have unique connections to Asia through missionaries, peace work, and student exchanges, among others. To get a feel for the "American Context of China's Christian Schools and Colleges" at other schools outside the tri-co, visit this website.

East Asia Documents (FMP File)
I created this file to serve as a guide for finding documents related to East Asia in Haverford's library (the regular stacks, not Special Collections). It also covers much material that's available online using computers on Haverford's campus. It allows you to search for information based on a number of different criteria:
- Do you want information about China, Japan, or other East Asian countries?
- What time period do you want to focus on?
- What type of materials are you interested in? Are you looking for English language newspapers published in China or about China? Missionary accounts? Travel journals? Government Documents?
- Do want information that was originally written in English? Or are you more interested in translations of Chinese or Japanese documents into English?
- Etc.

Books in the Stacks (Excel File)
This file (mostly China-centered) helps you locate published books available in the regular stacks of Haverford's library that are primary resources related to East Asia. It can be used in conjunction with the file above. It is a smaller, more focused list than East Asia Documents.
Manuscript collections are invaluable, but many times travel accounts, etc. have been published and available in hundreds of libraries across the US. You'll find one of the most useful things you can do when searching for relevant book in the library is to look for call numbers nearby a book that you know is a good source. I compiled this list by searching Haverford's open stacks, and looking for historical books that might be useful in research a course like this requires. It includes
- Journals written by Westerners traveling to Asia
- Other books written about China by Westerners
- Translation of original Chinese documents
- "Model Books" that rely on English language documents to perform original research (much like this course requires)
- For example, Jonathan Spence's The Chan's Great Continent relies solely on non-Chinese language documents, yet paints a detailed portrait of Chinese history. Here is sampling of the wide range of books he cites in this book.
TIPS for Using this file
Please note that the first 'page' of this 'Workbook' contains the complete list of books I looked at, but the list is also divided by category. At the bottom left of your window you will see a number of tabs that can be used to navigate between the different lists.
Searching within this list
If you have a particular book or author in mind, you can press CTRL and "F" at the same time and then type in your search terms
If you wish to sort the list alphabetically or numerically (i.e. by year) then you may do so by selecting the column that you want the data sorted by, and then choosing Data --> Sort from the toolbar (if a dialog box appears asking you if you want to expand your selection, say yes).
Tripod
As you all know, use Tripod to search for books in the Tri-Co libraries. (If the libraries don't have a book or article that you want, use Inter-Library Loan)
If you've pulled up a record and want to find more like it, click on its Call Number or the link to the related Subjects to pull up a bigger list of entries with similar descriptions.
Some tips when searching tripod for government documents. Its not always obvious which search terms to use when looking for government documents. Start out with these.

Off-Campus
Alas, not everything is available at Haverford's library. Below are some items that might inspire you to dig deep and find resources available only off-campus (ILL might help but you can't, for example, request an old newspaper through E-Z Borrow):
- British Board of Trade
- China Association (of London) – 1889-1906
- (British) Parliamentary Papers
- London and China Telegraph (Newspaper during late 1800’s and early 1900’s; published in Shanghai)
In particular, here are some newspapers that were published in China, but are not available on any of the Tri-Co campuses (click here for research guides to Chinese newspapers):
Nankai Social and Economic Quarterly. Nankai Institute of Economics, Nankai University, Tientsin. 1935-1940’s. Also see Nankai Weekly Statistical Service (1928-1933). And Monthly Bulletin on Economic China (1934).*
The Yenching Journal of Social Sciences. Yenching University, Peking. Semiannual, 1938-1950.
Chinese Economic Journal. Peking, Shanghai, Chinese Government Bureau of Economic Information, 1927-1937. Preceded by Chinese Economic Monthly. Also published Chinese Economic Bulletin.
