Individual Study Carrels

Magill Library has 178 study carrels (30 faculty, 148 student) that may be reserved. Magill Library also has one Assistive Computing and Academic Support carrel. To find out more about using a carrel, please view the appropriate section below.

Magill Library has 30 faculty carrels, 8 of which are wired for access to the campus network. These carrels are assigned to HC faculty only. To apply for a carrel, please visit Magill Library's Front Desk.

Faculty study carrels are assigned according to the following priorities:

  1. Currently teaching faculty
  2. Faculty on leave in-residence with no other campus office
  3. Faculty on leave in-residence with campus office
  4. Administrative staff with special needs

Policy governing the duration of assignment:

  1. Study carrels are assigned for one semester or one academic year at a time, as is appropriate (see rules above).
  2. Study carrels may be renewed, according to the above priorities, at the beginning of each semester for the next semester, or at the beginning of the fall semester for the following academic year.
  3. If the study carrel is not renewed, keys must be returned and the carrels cleaned out by the end of the assigned semester or by the end of August for year assignments.
  4. If at any time during the academic year the study carrel is no longer needed, the Circulation Services Supervisor should be informed and the carrel key returned so that it may be reassigned.

The policies governing the use of these studies are:

  • Study carrel doors must be kept locked at all times.
  • No phone calls or meetings.
  • Computers can be used in all carrels, however only the 7 wired carrels have access to the campus network.
  • The Libraries accept no responsibility for lost or stolen items. Personal items and library materials may be left in the study carrel at the individual's own risk.
  • All library material must be properly charged out.
  • All study carrels will be checked periodically for library materials not properly charged out; these will be removed and returned to the stacks.
  • All carrels will be entered regularly for trash collection and light dusting.

Student carrels are located in Magill Library on the Basement, 1st Tier, 3rd Tier, and 4th Tier.

Any Haverford student may apply for a carrel. Bryn Mawr students who live at Haverford may also apply. A Bryn Mawr student who is majoring at Haverford will have her application considered on a case by case basis.

Two students are assigned to each carrel. Seniors (including Bryn Mawr seniors residing at Haverford) may request a single carrel if they apply during the first two weeks of the fall semester, and the library will make every effort to fill their request. However, as demand fluctuates from year to year, we may not always have sufficient space to do so.

The carrel lottery is held at the beginning of the Fall Semester. Assignments will be e-mailed or can be obtained by inquiring at the desk by the 3rd week of classes in September. Anyone who does not submit an application during the lottery period will be assigned to the carrels that are left on a first-come, first-served basis until there are no carrels left.

Applications for carrels may be dropped off at Magill Library's Front Desk during the weeks the lottery is being held. Those students who are on leave may fill out an application before they leave or they may send it via mail or as a scan via mail or email (as a scan).

Applications include the rules governing carrel use. By signing the application you are agreeing to abide by these rules. Students may select the person with whom they wish to share a carrel, or they will be assigned a carrel mate during the lottery. For those making application during the lottery period, priority for carrels will be determined in the following order:

  1. Haverford seniors working on a thesis and Haverford students living off-campus (HCA not included).
  2. Other Haverford students who have specified a preference for a carrel on their application.
  3. Those Haverford students who applied and could not be given their choice or who did not specify a preference will be randomly assigned a carrel.

Located on the 1st tier of Magill Library, this carrel is available for use by students with assistive computing and/or academic support needs. Its use requires a referral by the Office of Disability Services. A list of eligible and referred students will be kept at the Circulation Desk and updated each semester.

Access is by card key which is available at the Front Desk. As with other areas of this kind, the area must be vacated and the card key returned by 11:00 pm on Sundays through Thursdays and by 5:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
